Have you ever thought?

The world is in your eyes and in the eyes of your parents

What is the difference?

The world in the eyes of diabetic retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is one of the common microvascular complications of diabetes, caused by retinal microvascular damage caused by long-term hyperglycemia. Early diabetic reticulum may have no obvious symptoms or only slight blurred vision, which is often overlooked; Once it progresses to the middle and late stages, it will lead to a sharp decline in vision or even blindness.

Early detection and intervention of the glucose reticulum are crucial, and patients with diabetes should undergo regular fundus photography for early detection and timely treatment.

The world in the eyes of age-related macular degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration is a disease whose incidence gradually increases with age, mostly occurring in people over 50 years of age. Age-related macular degeneration can lead to visual distortion, vision loss, dark shadows in front of the eyes, and even blindness. Regular fundus examinations can help patients detect diseases in time, so that scientific means can be taken for treatment in the first time.

Regular fundus examinations are important

Fundus diseases are like silent thieves, and once vision is stolen, the damage is often irreversible. Worse, vision loss not only increases the risk of falls in the elderly, but also indirectly leads to reduced social interaction, increased risk of depression, and even gradual loss of self-care ability.

The insidiousness of fundus problems determines the need for regular check-ups. For the elderly without chronic diseases, a comprehensive fundus examination is performed at least once a year, including fundus photography and OCT examinations, while people with chronic diseases (such as diabetes) need more frequent monitoring. In particular, it is necessary to pay attention to signs such as visual distortion (straight line bending), fixed dark shadows in front of the eyes, flashing light, or short-term vision sudden decline, and seek medical attention immediately if they appear.

What should we do?

1. Tell parents how to self-test

Alternate observation with one eye: Cover one eye separately to observe whether straight objects such as door frames and window edges are deformed. If the straight line appears curved, distorted, or incomplete, it may be a sign of fundus lesions.

Amsler Checker: Use the Amsler Checkered Chart for self-examination every month. Place the grid table at 30 cm of eye level, and the light should be sufficient and even. If you have presbyopia or myopia, you need to wear your original glasses. Cover one eye, gaze at the black dot in the center of the grid table, and check the other eye alternately. If you notice blanks, curves, or scotomas in the center of the grid, it may be a sign of macular degeneration and it is recommended to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

2. Medical reminder

Emergency medical treatment: If you have symptoms such as visual distortion, dark shadow occlusion or sudden loss of vision, you need to see a doctor as soon as possible for timely diagnosis and treatment.

Regular examination suggestions: Elderly people without chronic diseases should have a comprehensive fundus examination at least once a year; Diabetic patients are advised to schedule eye exams in conjunction with endocrinology follow-ups to provide a comprehensive assessment of their eye health.
